Kassiopi - Apollon Apartments, Kassiopi Corfu

Kassiopi is one of the biggest and most important villages of North Corfu. It used to be a Roman resort and it was often visited by emperors. In [photo] the famous temple of Kassios Zeus, after which the area was named, Nero used to organize the recitations of his ludicrous poems. The strategic position of the port of Kassiopi in the narrow passage between Corfu and the Albanian shores was the reason for its fortification.

The castle lies on a hill in the northeast coast of the village of Kassiopi, diving the village's two beaches. It is oldest castle of Corfu. It was built by the Venetians (229BC-337AC), when they occupied the island. The castle suffered great damages over the years, the most destructive ones being those ones caused by the siege and the invasion of the Turks in 1571. Today some parts of the castle are preserved among which are the fort's walling, the towers, the gate, the bastions, the water tank and some of the Venetian cannons.

The other most significant monument of the village is the church of Panaghia Kassopitra in honor of the Virgin Mary. It was built in the first Christian centuries in the place of the ancient temple of Kassios Zeus. In 1537 it was destroyed during a Turkish raid and in 1590 it was renovated completely by the Venetians.

Kassiopi is surrounded by a wealth of vegetation and behind it lies the mount of Pantokrator.

In the village of Kassiopi there are 2 beaches. In the first one, with pebbles, there are deck chairs and parasols to let and it is possible for you to do various activities (diving, water-skiing, etc.) The other beach is located behind the cape and even though the beach's dimensions are smaller it is more characteristic one.

Kassiopi is a fully organized tourist resort.

Kassiopi Apartments Corfu - Mythology

  1. According to the dominant tradition Kassiopi was the wife of Kifeas and mother of Andromeda. Because Kassiopi boasted that she was prettier than Hera and the Nereids, she angered Hera and the Nereids who asked from the god of the sea, Poseidon, to punish her. Then Poseidon sent a cetacean, a terrible sea monster that ruined the coasts of the land of Kassiopi. To placate Poseidon, the royal couple was made to give Andromeda to be eaten by the monster. Then Perseus showed up and rescued her. After her death, Kassiopi was transformed into the constellation so as to protect (the people) from above, just like the rest of the heroes of the myth. Everywhere in ancient Greece the basic shape in the constellation corresponds to a woman sitting on a throne ("The one of the throne")
  2. Apollo was the Great god of the Greek Pantheon. According to mythology, he was born from god Zeus and Leto. He was the god of the sun and light, protector of youth and all of the arts and father to the Muses. In antiquity many feasts were held to honor Apollo.
  3. The nine Muses, Apollo's daughters, were deities protecting poetry, dance, astronomy and generally the arts and the sciences.

Clio, the Muse of History, Euterpe the Muse of Music, Polyhymnia the Muse of hymns and mime, Terpsichore the Muse of dance and choral poetry, Erato the Muse of lyric poetry, Melpomene the Muse of tragedy, Urania the Muse of astronomy and Calliope the Muse of epic poetry gave their names to the apartments and the studios of Apollon Apartments and they urge you to enjoy your vacations in Kassiopi, Corfu.
